Innovative Healthcare Safety Solutions

Overview

SafeStart, a leading healthcare technology company, works diligently to leverage technology to enhance patient safety. Considering the healthcare systems that still lack improvement, SafeStart aimed to improve the system for how healthcare professionals access, communicate, and make decisions using essential patient data. They chose to work with Techling to combine mobile and web platforms into a single solution, prioritising the user experience.

Problems

Fragmented Patient Records Across Disparate Systems

SafeStart found it challenging to create a central location to hold the records of all patients. Important documents, including consent forms, medication records, patient notes, and diagnostic images, were found in various locations and storage systems. Due to this fragmentation, maintaining consistent records was challenging, resulting in difficulties accessing key information and preventing duplicates or errors. Clinicians were required to navigate various interfaces or consult different departments for answers, which consumed time and could lead to mistakes in busy healthcare settings.

Delayed and Inefficient Collaborative Review Process

Reviewing safety checklists and protocols typically included input from surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and patients. Still, at the time, there wasn’t a unified online tool where people could collaborate in real-time. Often, approvals were delayed due to communication issues and slow manual processes. Critical annotations and approvals on the surgical safety checklists were occasionally not recorded or updated promptly, which put patients at risk and could have led to errors in care.

Lack of Real-Time Access to Critical Patient Data

It was challenging for healthcare providers in busier or mobile settings to have their patient data readily available. Stationary systems or delays caused by team members having to upload recent results were typical for healthcare professionals. Because they could not access or modify patient records while they were out, clinicians struggled to determine the best treatment during emergencies, rounds, or telehealth sessions. This lack of real-time access also created challenges for patients and their care who needed teamwork across shift changes and different areas of speciality.

Solutions

Centralized Patient Records for Seamless Data Access and Accuracy

Techling organised all patient documents, including consent forms, clinical notes, diagnostic scans, and annotated images, within a single database.

Example

During the preparation for surgery, surgeons can immediately view radiologists’ annotated images from within the same system, minimising extra effort. Removing these issues ensured that records were more accurate as everyone updated them.

Collaborative Safety Checklists for Real-Time Communication and Accountability

A dynamic checklist feature has been integrated by Techling to help handle delays in joint safety checks. With this, surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists and even patients could view, annotate and sign the checklists at any time.

Example

For example, all participants in a surgery could use the app to confirm patient identity, allergies, and surgical details ahead of the procedure.

Real-Time Access to Patient Data Anytime, Anywhere

Recognising the importance of apps working seamlessly on mobile phones, Techling developed native iOS applications using Swift and ensured that data updates occur instantly. Because of this, health professionals can look at and edit patient files even during hospital rounds, remote consultations, and while working in multiple areas.

Example

As an example, being on-call doesn’t stop a physician from seeing what’s new in the patient’s chart and making significant decisions, even from a different location.

Features & Benefits

Mobile-First Efficiency

The mobile-first focus of the system enabled clinicians to access and manage patient information through an iOS app, even when they were not at the office. The remote access feature was convenient during urgent situations and for professionals working at various locations. This allowed for speedy meetings, quick data input, and easy access to recent information, thereby speeding up care and reducing the risk of missing things.

Scalable and Secure Architecture

Techling applied HIPAA standards to their cloud service, which allowed SafeStart to handle more data smoothly. Every piece of information was protected by end-to-end encryption and underwent regular compliance checks, ensuring adherence to the rules required in the current healthcare sector. As more people use the system, SafeStart can handle the demand without requiring significant changes to its architecture.

User-friendly Design

Making navigation simple for the user and including role-based access were the main priorities in designing the user interface. This choice allowed users to control the system, even those who are not tech-savvy. The platform's powerful usability meant that healthcare professionals and patients quickly accepted it, overcoming the typical challenges associated with new technology.
